Our facilitator will discuss insurance needs for different types of businesses. How much insurance do you need? What kind of insurance do you need? If you are carrying only the minimum amount of liability insurance on a vehicle that is required in your state -- it leaves you vulnerable. On the other hand paying $500 a year for theft insurance when your property is only worth $1,000, will bleed cash from your business and get you very little protection in return. Know your lender's limits; if you don't have enough to cover your loan on a building, the lender might insure it himself and charge you a greater amount than if you insured it. Learn all the ins-and-outs of insurance and their coverages.
Don't wait until you have a loss to decide what type of insurance coverage you should have had. Protection of company assets and coverage for key personnel will also be discussed at this seminar. Question and answer period.
Get your insurance questions answered at this seminar.
NOTE: A discount of $10 for this seminar is available if paid five days prior to session date.

The Changing Business Landscape
Two Recent Legislations Impacting Businesses – Healthcare and HIRE Act
Healthcare and HIRE Act have been in the news for months and a lot of information is available on what they are “suppose to do” but little can be found on “what needs to be done” by the business owner and how it will impact their operation.
The Lord Fairfax Small Business Development Center, SBDC, has asked representatives from the accounting and insurance industries to present a session to provide a forum for businesses to learn how these two new legislations will impact day-to-day operations and how a business can take advantage of the opportunities they represent. The session will address many of the questions these changes pose.
Healthcare reform through the Affordable Care Act is scheduled to provide benefits to small business owners and their employees by expanding coverage options, lowering costs and giving consumers, not insurance companies, control over their own health care. But how is this accomplished and is there a cost?
One of the many ways the new law is scheduled to help small businesses is through tax credits starting this year. These credits should help small business owners provide health insurance to their workers – by giving back up to 35 percent of the employee premiums they pay starting this year. Small businesses may receive state health care tax credits and still qualify for the federal tax credit.
A second act to encourage hiring of new employees, the Hiring Incentives to Restore Employment (HIRE) Act provides immediate tax incentives for each qualified employee hired after February 3, 2010, and before January 1, 2011. Who is a qualified employee?
Among other features this act provides for a payroll tax exemption. Regardless of their size, employers are eligible for an exemption from the employer portion of the Social Security component of FICA taxes. There are limits and requirements though. Among other requirements, a newly hired employee must have been unemployed for the 60 days preceding his or her hire date. The tax exemption is not available for new employees that displace current employees or for certain disqualified employees, such as relatives of business owners. There are also incentives for retaining employees hired under the HIRE Act.
For more information call the SBDC at 540 868 7093 .
Discount of $5 for SBDC clients, local chamber members and veterans.
Pre-paid registration is required...registration closes on August 20th at 4 pm.
